Spring on the Chesapeake: A Sailing Weekend Guide

There is a particular quality of light on the Chesapeake Bay in late April that no photograph fully captures. The sky is the pale, washed blue of old china, and the water—still cold enough to be crystalline—reflects it with a clarity that will disappear by July. This is the window, roughly April through Memorial Day, when the Bay belongs to the sailors who know it.

From The Alderton, the City Dock is a five-minute walk. Our concierge maintains relationships with three local charter companies who operate skippered and bareboat charters from 28 to 48 feet. For guests who have never sailed, we recommend a half-day sail with a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed captain who can take you out into the Bay and back before lunch. For experienced sailors, the bareboat option opens up an entire network of anchorages within a day’s sail: Gibson Island, St. Michaels, Oxford, and the Eastern Shore creeks that feel entirely removed from the world.

If you are planning a sailing weekend, book Thursday or Sunday night departures. Friday-to-Sunday is peak, and dock space at the popular anchorages—especially St. Michaels—fills by noon on Saturday. We can arrange a packed lunch from The Compass Rose: a chilled crab salad in a mason jar, an oyster shooter or two, local cheese, and a half-bottle of Maryland Gruner Veltliner in a cooler that fits in any cockpit.

The return journey from any Bay anchorage is best in the afternoon, when the southerly fills in and the boat sails itself. Arrive back at City Dock by 5 pm, walk up the hill to The Alderton, and you have earned the clawfoot tub in the Harbour View King. We will have Champagne and a cheese board waiting. Ask the front desk when you make the reservation.

The Chesapeake in spring is a secret that Annapolis locals have kept for a long time. It will not stay a secret much longer. Come before the summer crowds, before the humidity, before the diesel smell of the powerboat parade. Come when the water is still cold and the light is still sharp and the crab pots are just going back in the water. That is when the Bay is at its most itself.
