The most requested proposal setting at The Alderton is The Compass Rose private dining room at sunset on a weekday in spring or fall. The room seats eight but for a proposal it is set for two, with a single arrangement of white peonies (the traditional flower in the original Maryland Federal-style wedding tradition), two flutes of Dom Pérignon on ice, and a custom dessert with a handwritten message from Chef Emily Hartwell’s team. Our concierge coordinates with you on every detail, including the precise moment the ring should emerge and what the server’s role should be.

The Terrace at dusk in September is the outdoor option. The string lights are at their best on warm evenings when there is a low breeze off the bay. We can arrange for the rest of the Terrace to be empty (contact us at least two weeks in advance) and for a champagne tray to be brought out after the question. The naval ships in the harbor at twilight provide a backdrop that requires no enhancement.

The Alderton Suite itself — our most celebrated room — is the indoor alternative for guests who prefer complete privacy. We can arrange the room with flowers, Champagne on ice, a note from you placed on the pillow, and candles lit on the deck before your arrival. The harbor view at sunset from the private deck on the fourth floor is, in our opinion, the single most beautiful view available to a guest in Annapolis.
